CAMEOS TO CAMAFEOS

The history of the Cameo begins with a nice story...
A girl, Corinth Dibutade, Sicyon Butades's daughter, who was a legendary performer of ancient Greece, probably from the seventh century B. C. Dibutade Corinth fell in love with a young man of Corinth, and the groom arranged to go abroad, the last night when he left, the bride had the idea of staying with the portrait of his mistress, for which traced the outline of her face, indicated by the shadow on the wall of the room. Butades applied a layer of clay, that he modeled along the sinuosities of that face, he removed the clay to wall and he baked it and earned a lasting portrait, that it affirms the tradition preserved in the Ninfeo of Corinth until the Romans conquered the city, led by Mumio and razed it.

In the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, silhouettes became popular as faster and cheaper ways to have portraits of loved ones when they could not afford to order them to an artist.

The reason for its popularity today is related to the rich, beautiful and haunting work of Kara Walker, whose scenes of silhouettes address the historical legacy of violence, abuse and revenge between blacks and whites.
